Return to What Shall We Wear?

Dressing the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom

It’s the mothers’ responsibility to dress themselves, of course, not the bride’s, although the bride and her mother may shop for the mother’s dress together if they wish. The bride may have preferences, but ultimately it’s up to the mothers! Care should be taken that the dresses do not clash with each other or the wedding colors.

Things to Consider

The Mother of the Bride Should Consider
  • Her dress
  • Required hosiery and undergarments
  • Her shoes
  • Her hairstyle
  • Her accessories
  • The wedding colors and style
  • The attire of the bridesmaids
  • Her daughter’s preferences

The Mother of the Groom Should Consider
  • The color and style of the MOB dress
  • Her dress
  • Required hosiery and undergarments
  • Her shoes
  • Her hairstyle
  • Her accessories
  • The wedding colors and style
  • The attire of the bridesmaids
  • The bride’s preferences, if any

The mother of the bride chooses her dress first and informs the groom’s mother of her choice, in as much detail as is necessary for the groom’s mother to choose something complementary and fitting. The MOB should be prompt about this so that the MOG has sufficient time to obtain a dress.

The MOG chooses her dress in reference to the MOB choice (as well as to anything else she knows about the wedding).

Step-mothers who are not in the “mother of the bride” or “mother of the groom” role should dress in a way that is complementary to the wedding party and to the mothers. They should not “out do” the mothers, intentionally or accidentally.
