Pay Attention to the Weather

Know what to expect and prepare for all of the possibilities. Daytime showers may make travel easier and safer. Consider having a “snow date” ready in case you have to cancel.

Take Advantage of Seasonal Produce.

If you grow a garden, and have storage crops in your cellar or basement, use what you have an abundance of. Overrun with butternut squash? Serve it to your guests!

If you don’t have a garden, in season produce may be more cost effective and things that are currently in season where you live are a perfect fit for a winter party.

What’s On Sale In Winter?

Think about upcoming holidays and themes (Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, spring) especially when it comes to party supplies and decorations. Grab things for the shower while they’re on sale! You don’t have to use all the colors in those color schemes.

Seasonal Produce

Use seasonal produce to decorate. You can always eat it later! Citrus fruits may be the best known, but there are others.

Use natural materials such as pinecones, twigs, and greenery. This can be the “seasonal produce” of your yard, or purchased items.

Holiday Decor

Use decorations you would normally use for Christmas (either decor you already have or that you–or the couple–can use later). Certain colors and themes are more readily available before holidays, and sales either before or after can save you money.
Christmas: Evergreens, wreaths and swags, red, green, silver, gold.
New Year’s: Gold, sparkly things.
Valentine’s Day: Red, pink, hearts, roses.
